THE PERMANENT EXHIBITION

The exhibits on the ground floor display the early stages of the history of glass and provide basic information on glassmaking techniques, including glassblowing, the mechanical production of glass and decorating techniques.

The upper floor of the building is devoted to the history of the Finnish glass industry and products such as bottles, polished crystal and pressed glass. The history of Finnish glass design is divided into sections on the history of serial manufacture, art glass, and glass art.

Polish artist Marta Klonowska (b. 1964) crowns this year’s exhibition season with an arresting flourish. Using shards of broken glass, Klonowska creates animal sculptures inspired by old paintings and drawings. The exhibition presents the artist’s sculptures alongside her original sketches and illustrations of her complex work stages.

UU Market: Viva Magenta

The theme of the exhibition is Pantone's color of the year, 'Viva Magenta'. The seven participating artists have each approached the theme from their own perspective and through different materials: how can the glow of magenta be captured in glass, ceramics, or wood?

Pantone is a standardized international color system, whose color choice of the year is a significant signal of current phenomena.

Phenomenal Form - Aalto Vase

May 13–October 15, 2023

The Finnish Glass Museum is hosting a special summer exhibition celebrating the 125th anniversary of the birth of Alvar Aalto. Phenomenal Form – The Aalto vase presents the story of the famed vase designed by Alvar Aalto (also known as the Savoy vase), charting its history from the design competition held by the Karhula-Iittala glassworks, its wave-making debut at the Paris World’s Fair and its journey to becoming a universally recognized icon of modern glass design.

Santtu Mustonen: Variants

May 13–September 24, 2023

In this exhibition, Santtu Mustonen explores textures of glass. His sculptures are based on precise outline drawings as well as freely rendered paintings. He captures manipulated three-dimensional textures on the surface of the glass with the help of 3D software and various mould-pressing techniques. Harnessing the natural reflectivity of glass, the dynamic linear textures and painting-inspired patterns add rhythm while also breaking up the coherent form of the sculptures.

Still Life – Nanny Still’s Glass, Design, and Art 

February 11–April 30, 2023 

The exhibition ”Still Life” showcases Nanny Still’s production from the 1950s to the early 2000s. Still’s versatile and extensive design and art are displayed in a way where the gaze meets a strong presence of style and artistic sense of direction. 

The exhibition consists of everyday glass found in the homes of many Finnish families, wanted collectibles, and unique art pieces. 

The art pieces and exhibition items are from the collections of The Finnish Glass Museum and private collectors, some rarely, if ever, displayed publicly before.

Teemu Kylvö – Teleports

Teemu Kylvö (b. 1994) is a glassblower working in Nuutajärvi. The exhibition presents Kylvö’s Teleport light fixtures he has created out of glass and is the first exhibition to open in The Finnish Glass Museum’s gallery space in 2023.

The works were blown by Teemu Kylvö and Otto Koivuranta, cold-working by Tommi Tikkinen and Juha Juselius.

glass – hand formed matter

February 11–April 23, 2023 

The international project "glass – hand formed matter", initiated by the weißensee school of art and design berlin, supported by art academies, glassworks and cultural institutions, aims to explore new perspectives for manual glass production in Germany and Europe. Glassmakers, artists, designers and students from Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, as well as from Finland and Sweden, were brought together to reinterpret and further develop the millennia-old craft of glassmaking.

The town of Lauscha in the Thuringian Forest was first mentioned in a historical document in 1597 in connection with the founding of its first glass factory. Since then, glass has been the town’s mainstay.

Gunnel Nyman, the designer of Facet, Rose Leaf, Serpentine, Calla and other glass items dear to the Finns, was a pioneer in glass at a time when the designer work was just emerging.

The production of Dora Jung covers nearly five decades, and she worked both as an artisan and a designer in the textile industry.

Kerttu Nurminen: My Nature, My World

Exhibition at Design Museum Iittala hosted by the Finnish Glass Museum

5.4.–1.10.2023

Kerttu Nurminen worked as a designer at the Nuutajärvi Glassworks from 1972 to 2007 and was the last salaried glass artist employed at the Iittala design company that Nuutajärvi was part of.

Nurminen designed many popular tableware items but balanced her commercial work with the many unique sculptures that she created through out her long career.
