Markku Salo - 25 Years of Design and Art in Glass

Exhibition at the Finnish Glass Museum, Riihimäki from May 9 to Sept. 7, 2008

The exhibition includes serially produced designs by Markku Salo from Marius to Aava and Diiva, but above all art in glass and other materials.

In 1983, Markku Salo was hired as a designer by the Nuutajärvi glassworks. This was the start of a career during which the operating conditions of the glass industry in Finland and the role of the designer have changed in many ways. Over the course of 25 years, the Nuutajärvi glassworks and its traditions, and their long history, have become an integral part of the life of Markku Salo. In the 1970s Salo studied both art and design, first art in KankaanpääArtSchool, then he graduated in 1979 as an industrial designer from the University of Art and Design Helsinki.

In his first solo exhibition in Helsinki in 1987 Markku Salo wanted to participate first-hand in shaping the objects, although he does not blow glass himself.  As an artist, Salo has avoided the boundaries set by materials from the very beginning. The content of art, not its material, is significant. Exhibitions in Finland and abroad have naturally been milestones in Markku Salo's career. Internationally significant exhibitions have included the Venezia Aperto Vetro exhibitions in Venice in 1996 and 1998 and the Global Art Glass in Öland, Sweden in 1999, 2002 and 2005. Memorable exhibitions in Finland include the Retretti exhibition of 1998 with its dancing robots, and a series of solo exhibitions at Galleria Uusitalo in Helsinki since 1999.

The contributors to the catalogue are Markku Valkonen (director of EMMA Espoo Museum of Modern Art), Tuula Poutasuo and Kaisa Koivisto. The graphic designer is Päivi Kekäläinen together with Markku Salo.

The press meeting takes place on Thursday the 8th of May, 2008 at 11 a.m.
