20 + 2 Years of Glass Art in Belgium

Exhibition in the FinnishGlassMuseum in Riihimäki from Feb. 16 to April 22, 2007
The glass studio of the Institute for Arts and Crafts (IKA) at Mechelen, Belgium was started in 1985 by the Czech glass artist Miloslava Svobodová.  The school is part of the unique Flemish system of part-time art education. The institute provides evening and weekend courses open to anyone aged 18 and older.  The starting point is not techniques for their own sake, but the use of techniques to give shape to ideas, with a great deal of attention given to composition and design. The courses take seven years: five years for the Certificate of Higher Secondary Education and two years of specialisation.

When we speak of the art glass in Belgium we can't avoid mentioning IKA. Just about every contemporary glass artist has studied in IKA or is associated with it in some way. This touring exhibition presents a picture of the evolution of the course and current state of affairs with 20 glass artists: Ingrid Arts, Bo De Baets, Luc De Bruyne, Sandra De Clerck, Danny De Mol, Olivier De Vos, Hennie Van Engeland, Paul Funcken, Inge Goossens, Josephine Hoefkens, Alexander Ketele, Roel Lambert, Jeroen Maes, Brigitta Mels, Lutgart Moons, Hugo Nelissen, Carine Neutjens, Xandra Paijmans-Bremers, Eric Pipien, Raf van Ransbeeck, Mai Renders, Rini Ronckers, Ingrid Rosschaert, Addi Ryckaert, Myriam Somers, Ivo Teuwen, Anita Tieltjes, Jane Sylvie Van den Bosch, Karin Vanderzande, Jan Van Gucht, Kristel Van Lent, Frerick Van Overschelde, Patrick Van Tilborgh, Koen Vanderstukken, Anja Van Remoortel.
