Finnish Glass from the 21st Century

October 22nd 2006

The 1950's were the Golden Age of Finnish glass design, with well known names like Kaj Franck, Timo Sarpaneva and Tapio Wirkkala. Their influence is evident in the works of modern day Finnish glass design and glass art. Only in recent years, glass as art found its way into broader awareness among Finns, although this field is still strongly influenced by the design tradition. Whether working as designers for glassworks, in looser collaboration with industry or in their own studios, glass artists create in their own specific ways serial products, art glass, glass art, installations and works of sculpture.

This exhibition of modern Finnish glass is on show in the National Glass Museum Leerdam to celebrate current Finnish chairmanship of the European Union.
