Näyttely Suomen lasimuseossa 26.9.-31.12.2008

Toisen maailmansodan jälkeen moni Sudeettialueen (Pohjois-Böömi, Tsekkoslovakia) vanha tehdas omistajineen ja työntekijöineen joutui etsiytymään muualle. Ludwig Breit, joka omisti vuonna 1868 perustetun lasitehtaan Wiesenthalissa (Lucany nad Nisou) löysi uuden paikan Schwäbisch-Gmündistä Württenbergistä Länsi-Saksasta. Tehtaan päätuotteena olivat lasitangot ja lasihelmet. Vuonna 1957 aloitettiin talouslasituotanto, josta tuli hyvin suosittua. Omistajan poika Klaus Breit tunsi hyvin  pohjoismaisten lasitehtaiden tuotannon ja muotoilijana Wiesenthalhüttessä työskennellyt Heinz H. Engler oli ollut jopa harjoittelijana Arabian posliinitehtaalla. Wiesenthalhütten uusi talouslasituotanto olikin saanut vaikutteita mm. Nuutajärven lasitehtaan tuotannosta ja poikkesi modernilla muotoilullaan ja värikkyydellään monen muun 1950-luvun saksalaisen lasitehtaan melko perinteisestä lasista.

Klaus Breit johti Wiesenthalhütten tuotantoa vuoteen 1989 saakka. Vuonna 2004, juuri ennen kuolemaansa, hän lahjoitti mittavan yksityiskokoelmansa düsseldorfilaiselle Glasmuseum Hentrichille. Kokoelman pohjalta koottu näyttely oli esillä Düsseldorfissa syksyllä 2007. Näyttelyn on koonnut Glasmuseum Hentrich - museum kunst palast Düsseldorf.

Modern German Glass

An exhibition at the Finnish Glass Museum, 26 September - 3 December 2008

After the Second World War, many of the old factories of the Sudetenland (North Bohemia in Czechoslovakia) had to relocate along with their owners and employees. Ludwig Breit, who owned a glassworks founded in 1868 at Wiesenthal (Lucany nad Nisou) found a new location at Schwäbisch-Gmünd in Württenberg, West Germany. The main products of the works were glass rods and beads. The production of household glassware was launched in 1957 and it became very popular. The owner's son, Klaus Breit, was familiar with the products of Nordic glassworks and Heinz H. Engler, a designer at the Wiesenthalhütte, had even been a trainee at the Arabia porcelain factory in Helsinki. The new output of household glassware at the Wiesenthalhütte was influenced by the products of the Nuutajärvi glassworks, among others, and through its modern design and colourful appearance it stood out among the largely traditional glassware of many other German glassworks of the 1950s.

Klaus Breit directed production at the Wiesenthalhütte until 1989. In 2004, just before his death, he donated his large private collection of glass to Glasmuseum Hentrich of Düsseldorf. The exhibition assembled on the basis of the collection was on show in Düsseldorf in the autumn of 2007. The exhibition has been compiled by Glasmuseum Hentrich - museum kunst palast, Düsseldorf.
