The book is published in conjuction with the exhibition "Tapio Wirkkala" - eye, hand and thought" held at the Museum of Art and Design from August 25, 2000 through January 14, 2001. The exhibition has been organized in collaboration with the Finnish Glass Museum, Riihimäki.

This publication takes a wide view of Tapio Wirkkala's multifaced genius. Nine thematic essays by Finnish and other writers provide in-depth studies of Wirkkala's personality, his world, and the diverse ways he related to design and art. Wirkkala's internationalism is evidenced by the strong presence of writers from abroad.
